FAQ
=> Concept + Accommodation
What is the ZERO Box Lodge concept?
ZERO Box Lodge is an irreverent urban lodging concept that offers a new way to experience the city: fewer distractions, more experience. Here, the capsules, wooden boxes, are designed as a space for absolute rest, dark, quiet, and minimalist, while life happens outside them, in the bars, restaurants, and common areas. It’s an invitation to disconnect from the obvious and immerse yourself in the essential.
What sets the ZERO Box Lodge concept apart from a traditional hotel?
At Zero Box Lodge, the experience goes far beyond the room itself. The capsules have no windows, televisions, or unnecessary amenities, focusing exclusively on comfort and the quality of sleep. In contrast, the common areas take center stage, promoting social interactions, sharing, and a connection to the city and local culture.
What is the ZERO Box Lodge in Porto?
Zero Box Lodge Porto is an accommodation that reimagines the traditional hotel experience. Here, guests sleep in minimalist capsules inspired by Japanese capsule hotels, as well as the enclosed beds used in Northern
Europe, designed to offer absolute comfort, silence, and total relaxation.
Housed in a historic building in Porto—the Banco Mello and a factory dating back to 1883—the lodge combines irreverent design, art, music, and cuisine, creating an unconventional space where the experience goes far beyond just sleeping.
Where is ZERO Box Lodge Porto located?
Zero Box Lodge Porto is located in the city center at Rua do Ateneu Comercial do Porto, 13, just a few minutes’ walk from Avenida dos Aliados, Bolhão Market, and the metro station. Its prime location makes it easy to explore the city’s main cultural, culinary, and historical attractions.
=> Architectural Design
Who was involved in the architectural design of the ZERO Box Lodge in Porto?
The architectural design of the Zero Box Lodge Porto was led by architect Gonçalo Queirós Carvalho
The branding, graphic design, and visual identity were created by Atelier d’ Alves, a design studio based in Porto, which won the Red Dot Award—a prestigious international design award—for this project. The photographic documentation of the space was handled by photographers João Tuna and Tiago Casanova, among others.
The architectural design of Zero Box Lodge Porto is the result of the renovation of a historic building in the city, reinterpreted through a contemporary and innovative approach.
The renovation preserved the building’s original structure, honoring its heritage and history, while introducing a disruptive hotel concept centered on minimalist and functional capsules.
The balance between the past and the present is embraced as part of the experience, combining authenticity, comfort, and a new way of inhabiting the building.
=> Services
How many capsules does Zero Box Lodge Porto have?
The lodge features 78 capsules, designed as part of an urban and contemporary concept, intended to provide practical and comfortable accommodation.
What are the capsules like?
The capsules are private wooden spaces with no windows facing the outside of the accommodation, designed to ensure complete rest at any time of day. Each capsule features a double bed, a private bathroom, air conditioning, and toiletries.
There are 3 types of capsules:
- Zero – a windowless capsule with a double bed and private bathroom.
- One – similar to the Zero capsule, but with a window.
- Two – a larger and more comfortable version of the One capsule.
The absence of natural light and electronic distractions promotes deep rest and better sleep quality.
Do the capsules have windows or a TV?
No. The capsules have neither windows nor a TV, precisely to provide a peaceful, restful environment free from direct light or outside distractions.
Does the accommodation have an elevator and accessibility features for people with limited mobility?
The accommodation has an elevator that provides access to the different floors of the building. It does not have elevator cabins adapted for people with limited mobility.

On check-in, guests are welcomed with our ZERO beer, served in an aluminum bottle created and customized exclusively for the project—a truly tailor-made Zero Box Lodge. This bottle is the key that kicks off the experience, an invitation to think outside the box from the very first moment.
On the rooftop, guests will find an area designed for relaxation and enjoying the outdoors, featuring water tanks, a sunbathing area with lounge chairs, and a seating area with tables. Access to the rooftop is via the City Club, located on the 5th floor.
Each stay also includes access to the City Club and Big Bad Bank Bar programming, which may include events, movies, or other experiences, depending on the schedule.

What is the noise policy?
Due to the nature of the capsules and our desire to provide total rest, guests are asked to remain quiet in the sleeping areas throughout the day.
Is there a restaurant on site?
Yes, and it has its own unique concept. Zero Box Lodge Porto features the restaurant O Carniceiro, a one-of-a-kind dining space that goes beyond a typical restaurant.
In addition, the same space houses the Big Bad Bank Bar, a cocktail bar with a distinctive atmosphere, located in a former vault, as well as other social spaces such as the Gonçalo M. Tavares Library, where you can also enjoy light meals, snacks, and drinks.
What kind of cuisine can I expect at ‘Carniceiro’?
Carniceiro is more than just a restaurant: meat takes center stage on the menu, featuring an open grill and a display of cuts to choose from on the spot, along with a selection of dishes designed for sharing. The concept offers a creative and relaxed experience in the heart of ZERO. It’s open daily from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays until midnight.
Does O’ Carniceiro host group dinners and private events?
Yes, O’ Carniceiro hosts group dinners and private events, subject to availability and prior reservation. The venue can be adapted to suit different types of events, from more informal gatherings to special occasions, always with a focus on a relaxed and shared experience.
For group orders or events, we recommend contacting us in advance (ocarniceiro@thezerohotels.com) to check availability, the number of guests, and any specific requirements.
What other common areas are there in the lodge?
In addition to the restaurant, Zero Box Lodge Porto features several communal spaces designed to extend the experience beyond the capsule.
On the ground floor, next to the Big Bad Bank bar, you’ll find the lounge area, which houses the Bookshop of Gonçalo M. Tavares, one of Portugal’s most important contemporary writers, with works published in over thirty-six languages across 52 countries. This is a peaceful space, ideal for reading, working, or simply slowing down.
Also on this floor, you can explore the Free Room concept, a space that reflects the project’s creative and experimental spirit, inviting guests to interact with the more artistic and unexpected side of Zero.
On the 2nd floor, the accommodation also offers a sauna.
On the 5th floor is the City Club, where events take place and which houses the cinema. In the morning, this space also serves as a breakfast room and provides access to the rooftop, designed for more relaxed moments outdoors.
What is the Free Room?
The Free Room is a permanent art installation created from a replica of a ZERO capsule, but with glass sides, designed to be a space for artistic expression, performance, and experimentation. It is a place designed for observing and being observed, creating a unique dynamic between those inside and those passing by outside.
Throughout the year, the Free Room can host a variety of artistic, cultural, and creative projects, spanning a wide range of fields and formats.
It also has a private bathroom (this one, indeed, offers privacy). It’s not for the shy; it’s for those who like to think outside the box. The Free Room is an installation live or not, but permanent located at the entrance to the ZERO Box Lodge in Porto.
Can anyone book the Free Room?
Participation in the Free Room is subject to specific conditions and does not function like a conventional accommodation reservation.
Since this is an artistic experience, we recommend reviewing the participation guidelines beforehand, where you will find all the necessary information regarding how it works, criteria, and conditions:
View the Free Room guidelines: https://porto.thevolumes.pt/free-room-the-zero-box-lodge-porto/regulamento-de-participacao-freee-room/
Does Zero Box Lodge Porto have spaces suitable for private or corporate events?
Yes, Zero Box Lodge Porto offers several spaces designed for corporate events, adaptable to different formats and occasions.
The City Club, on the 5th floor, serves as a multifunctional room for indoor events, with a capacity of up to 100 people in a cocktail setup or 80 seated guests. With a contemporary industrial vibe, it’s ideal for workshops, presentations, brand activations, press previews, or team-building activities. The space also features a sound system, a DJ booth, and a bar.
On the same floor is the cinema room, a more immersive and informal space equipped with beanbags, designed for experiences that break from the norm. It is particularly well-suited for creative presentations, brainstorming sessions, training sessions, or content viewings.
O’ Carniceiro offers a dynamic, communal atmosphere where the experience goes beyond that of a traditional restaurant. With an open grill, a selection of meats, and a menu designed for groups, it’s ideal for team dinners or more relaxed business meetings.
Right next door, Big Bad Bank complements the experience, serving as the perfect spot for an aperitif, a networking session, or a more informal post-event gathering.
Taken together, the industrial ambiance, central location, and variety of spaces make Zero Box Lodge Porto a versatile option for corporate events seeking to break away from the conventional format from meetings to brand activations or more informal team-building activities.
Does the lodge incorporate art into its concept?
Yes, art is an integral part of Zero Box Lodge Porto’s identity.
At Zero Box Lodge, art is present in various forms, ranging from art installations to more subtle elements that are part of the overall experience of the space. Throughout the lodge, guests will encounter various creative expressions, including the mysterious characters created by Paulo Rammuni.
More than just a decorative element, art emerges as a natural extension of the ZERO concept, present in different spaces and experiences. Examples of this include the Free Room, designed as a space for experimentation and creativity, and Gonçalo M. Tavares’ library, which reinforces the connection to culture and contemporary thought.
The building itself also incorporates reinterpreted historical elements, such as the former Banco Mello vault, now covered with a carpet designed by Diogo Muñoz, which recreates the traditional tile panels found in Porto’s churches.
A future-oriented accommodation that blends art and entertainment, inviting guests to explore each space freely and in unexpected ways.
Is the accommodation suitable for families with children?
All guests are welcome, but we do not have extra beds or provide cribs. Our capsules are designed as compact units with fixed double beds.
Is Zero Box Lodge Porto better suited for leisure or for business?
Zero Box Lodge Porto is suitable for both leisure stays and business trips.
For those on vacation or a getaway, there’s plenty to discover both inside and outside the lodge: a vibrant city right at your doorstep, unexpected experiences, spaces with character, and a whole Zero world designed to break away from the ordinary, explore, and have fun.
For those traveling for business, ZERO also offers a relaxed and functional environment, with spaces that can be used for work, informal meetings, or breaks from common areas with a coworking vibe to the bar, perfect for an after-work drink at the end of the day. Ultimately, whether for work or leisure, the experience is the same: live outside the box. Sleep inside it.
Does the accommodation have its own parking lot?
Zero Box Lodge Porto does not have on-site parking or its own parking spaces. However, there is public parking nearby, usually at an additional cost.

Outros projetos do grupo:

=> O que diz a imprensa?
